Independence day or the 4th of July is a federal holiday in the United States celebrated since 1941. Independence Day celebrations with festivities like parades, concerts, and fireworks have also included barbecues and family get-togethers on July 4th since 1776 after the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. The history of Independence Day begins with the American colonies fighting for independence from Great Britain. After the Revolutionary War, Independence Day was still commemorated by Americans and continues to be celebrated each 4th of July. The US Congress passed a law making July 4th a federal holiday in 1870.
